Healing from Cancer: Embracing Conventional Medicine and Universal Medicine

by Frances Taylor-Marshall, aged carer, nanny and counsellor, Sydney.

I am writing to express my heartfelt thanks to the Universal Medicine Practitioners who played a part in my healing processes. I am in deep appreciation for their super loving and professional care during the year I underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy for lymphoma.

I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in August 2013 and in late June 2014, was told that my body had had a complete metabolic response to treatment, therefore leaving me completely clear of any cancer. My haematologist said that given the stage and location of my cancer, he was in the beginning quite concerned for me, therefore, as he stated, he was “truly thrilled” that my body had responded as well as it did.

I feel this healing was in no small part thanks to Universal Medicine and its teachings and practitioners.

I first became interested in the Esoteric Teachings in the early 1990’s, when I read one of Alice A. Bailey’s books, and I felt I had found some of the missing links I’d been looking for on my quest to understand myself and the universe in which I live. I was so interested that I longed to have the opportunity to attend her college in either London or New York. I was a single mother of three children at the time, so the opportunity was not available to me, but my interest grew.

Then in the mid 2000’s, a friend left me a CD of a presentation by Serge Benhayon, and everything came together without having to travel too far and wide.

I had been an absolute workshop junkie during the 1980s, studied everything alternative from iridology, reflexology, natural therapies, reiki, transpersonal counselling, and attended retreats and talks and read a wide variety of self help books. But, for me it was the ‘Esoteric’ Teachings that helped me to join my dots!

I attended a Universal Medicine Retreat in Vietnam a few years ago with our eldest daughter, and it was a wonderful introduction to the esoteric teachings and Universal Medicine in the present day. During the past few years I have attended many of these workshops and have loved integrating the Esoteric Teachings and wisdom into my daily life.

When I got home from receiving the diagnosis of cancer I studied the photo I have beside my bed of me as an eight-year old girl walking along with my Mother holding my hand. I looked at this little girl and felt sad that I had brought her to this place today requiring cancer treatment, although on the other hand, I knew that she was in capable hands – mine, the medical profession’s and the practitioners of Universal Medicine.

I enjoyed engaging in the whole process of treatment – both medical and esoteric. I fully accepted and embraced all the medical treatments that were recommended, and received positive outcomes all along the way, and the medical staff would often comment on how well my body was accepting their treatments. I was able to embrace my situation and move through the numerous hospital appointments with a lightness of being.

The added esoteric treatments I chose were chemo wash/chakra puncture, nutritional guidance  to build healthy joyous cells, and loving esoteric healing sessions. The loving, deep and restorative on-line esoteric yoga sessions, remained ever present during my hospital treatments. They fully supported me to rest deeply; from home, no need to travel when unwell, therefore never needed to miss a class! A wholesome loving program that instilled in me confidence and reassurance that I was affording myself the best possible healing opportunities, allowing me to focus on the matters necessary for my body to do what it does best – heal itself!

There are no words to say how incredible it feels to learn you have a serious illness and to be able to accept such news as an opportunity for healing. And no words to describe the power and grace of knowing I am loved and am love, and that all I need to do is listen to and trust my body. My illness provided me with an opportunity to not only heal, but to evolve as a person. It has been an amazing grace in my life.

  1. So much understanding and wisdom beautifully shared Frances. I just loved reading this part “When I got home from receiving the diagnosis of cancer I studied the photo I have beside my bed of me as an eight-year old girl walking along with my Mother holding my hand. I looked at this little girl and felt sad that I had brought her to this place today requiring cancer treatment, although on the other hand, I knew that she was in capable hands – mine, the medical profession’s and the practitioners of Universal Medicine.”

  2. The courses and presentations that are on offer now, both from Universal Medicine and practitioners trained by UM are wonderfully supportive, both for everyday life, and , as Frances writes, when something extreme happens.

  3. “There are no words to say how incredible it feels to learn you have a serious illness and to be able to accept such news as an opportunity for healing.” This is such a profound statement of where Universal Medicine presents modalities and a way of living to deeply heal rather than only seek a cure for symptoms.

  4. What a healing for us all to read this Frances. I am learning more and more that illness is a healing in itself if we so choose to see it that way. I remember when I got a warning that something was amiss in my body, it was producing cysts to tell me all was not well, I started making changes as if they were malignant. I just thought why wait, if there are changes to be made and I know what they are, make them now as life choices, not a reaction to medical necessity. The support of the practitioners trained in Universal Medicine therapies has, like your experience, been amazing.

  5. Thank you Frances, it is so beautiful to feel the love and responsibility with which you embraced your illness which really was a healing. It seems that this episode not only provided a healing for you but for others too as the medical profession who met you will have been touched as will all those who read this blog for years to come.

  6. What you describe is an active and knowing participation in your process, as needed and administered by conventional medicine and the Esoteric Therapies, a winner on all counts: ” I was able to embrace my situation and move through the numerous hospital appointments with a lightness of being.” It sounds like your active involvement and your choices turned remission or absence of the disease into true healing.

  7. It is inspiring how you chose to embrace the powerful mix of conventional Medicine, Esoteric Medicine and self responsibility to take care of yourself, and great to read how this supported you “to learn you have a serious illness and to be able to accept such news as an opportunity for healing” and deeply from within “knowing I am loved and am love, and that all I need to do is listen to and trust my body”. This is a blog that every person with a serious condition could do with reading.

  8. A beautiful account Frances, it is rare to hear someone speak of their Cancer experience in this way. To embrace your medical treatment as you did and for your body to respond so well is in my view, directly linked. While many accept the necessity of treatment, it is often out of fear for what will happen if they don’t. This is completely different to the acceptance and embracing you describe, and it is in that difference that I feel the body becomes more receptive and compliant with what is possible.

  9. “I enjoyed engaging in the whole process of treatment – both medical and esoteric.” How many people can say that about their treatment for cancer I wonder. I’ll wager not many, if but a handful. It’s such an incredible way to approach what for the vast majority is a time of ‘fighting’ against the disease. Acceptance and surrendering instead have been the most amazing healing for you that this should be a recommended part of everyone’s treatment program.

  10. Frances – I love the fact that you embraced the illness as an opportunity. Too many of us see illness or disease as a burden, as something we have done wrong or that it is a nuisance to have to experience. The fact is that you used this as an opportunity to realise that there was healing involved and above all that it was not about you doing it by yourself. Thank you for such an inspiring and precious sharing!

  11. I was a bit of a workshop junkie at one time of my life too, fervently seeking another way to live – because the way I was living was certainly not working. I agree with what Frances has shared here – the Esoteric way, as shared by Universal Medicine and Serge Benhayon has joined up the dots in the fullest of ways and I no longer find my self seeking solutions, but finding answers.

  12. When I read accounts such as this one, or ponder some of the bigger events of my own life, I always sense there is a much grander picture we are all part of. Yes, we become focused on this physical existence but the Grandness we are part of is always there, saying feel this, be aware of that – and it seems that in the midst of what is often perceived as a terrible thing, we are offered deeper awareness if we choose it. Perhaps we are always being shown ‘there is more’ and we sometimes need a bit of help to see that.

  13. I guess I have made it my focus to work on the energy and momentums I am living in today rather than thinking about whether this will happen to me to. I recognise that It is good not to live in fear of it, but I must check in sometimes that I do not avoid the subject too, as being rather close to the bone for my liking. The cancer statistics today are huge.

  14. It is great to be reminded that Cancer is a healing in itself, the body is cleansing and making tumors like dustbins in the body for whatever ill energies need to be cleared. Yes, there is how did I get to this point? No point in blame or shame, just dealing with it as you describe here so well.

  15. ” I studied the photo I have beside my bed of me as an eight-year old girl walking along with my Mother holding my hand. I looked at this little girl and felt sad that I had brought her to this place today requiring cancer treatment,” This made a real impression on me. How did I start out this lifetime, and where have I brought myself to today? I know Universal Medicine has played a huge and very positive part in that.

  16. I have just looked over these blogs again and noticed that having read most of them I had missed out a couple and that they are all cancer related ones. My mother died of cancer at 49, a year younger than me now. I can feel there is still a trace of me avoiding this subject – as if that would make any difference if I needed to heal that way. So I am here to look at that.

  17. Your love of life and true appreciation of Universal Medicine is felt here. It is inspiring how you embraced your healing and accepted all the love and support that was and is available to you.

  18. “My illness provided me with an opportunity to not only heal, but to evolve as a person. It has been an amazing grace in my life”.
What an amazing transformation for you Frances and what a wonderful opportunity, which you have obviously grasped with gratitude and appreciation; very inspiring thank you.

  19. Thank you for sharing your story Frances, to see your illness as an opportunity to deeply surrender to true healing through combining both Western medicine and Esoteric understanding is very inspiring.

  20. This shows a deep level of surrender to allow the true healing to take place. This is key I am realising more and more, as without any true surrender even if the body can heal the physical symptoms, the energetic cause will never be truly healed

  21. Universal Medicine practitioners actually embody what they say … it is never about lip-service or just saying the right words, the words always come with a living experience of re-connection to the inner heart.

  22. Frances, what a positive role model you are in how you have approached not only your diagnosis and treatment but also the combination of Western and complementary medicine! Something that stood out for me was around noting that the young child you once knew yourself to be was still there and in very capable hands. This is a lovely reflection for me to take and remind myself that no matter what, the beautiful little girl is still there inside of me.

  23. “…My illness provided me with an opportunity to not only heal, but to evolve as a person. It has been an amazing grace in my life…” What a beautiful balanced way to approach a diagnosis of an illness and the ensuing treatment with conventional medicine and the esoteric understanding..

  24. I was deeply touched by your description of the photograph of you as a child and it made me think back to my own childhood – do we ever know what lays ahead? And looking back, how many of us need to apologise to our small self for the misery and abuse we have brought to ourselves in this lifetime? I guess what matters more is that we stop the abuse and take greater care of ourselves, no matter what age we are now.

  25. ‘I enjoyed engaging in the whole process of treatment – both medical and esoteric.’ That is an extraordinary thing to be able to write about going through treatment for cancer. Amazing. Thank you Frances.

  26. Thank you Frances for sharing such a beautiful story of acceptance, surrender and true healing that you offered yourself through your loving choices.

  27. Frances I am returning and reading your blog again tonight. Over the past few days I have read blogs that have shared very similar experiences as you have. How Esoteric Healing supports the body through treatment for cancer. This is revolutionary and needs to be shared far and wide, especially when we consider how many people are affected by cancer.

  28. Trust is the issue here, as with so many aspects of our society, fundamental trust in institutions is sadly lacking… To the point where so many people feel totally disempowered, manipulated, and seek refuge in disengagement and abnegation of personal responsibility. Universal Medicine brings the integration of personal responsibility, reconnection with oneself, and this reempowers the individual to know exactly what is needed for themselves to truly heal.

  29. Thank you Frances, for sharing your inspiring story of how you embraced both conventional and esoteric medicine during your medical treatment as part of the healing process to give yourself and your body the best opportunity to truly heal. It is deeply touching to feel how your experience enabled you to evolve and reach a far deeper connection in truly loving yourself and your body.

  30. There is an enormous paradigm shift that society has to make with regards to illness, and disease. In bygone eras, the connection with the heart body and soul with regards to healing was most paramount indeed, all that there was. Until the interrelatedness of all things is again felt, the healing of humanity will continually look like the worm Ouroboros, continually consuming its own tail, and not getting anywhere.

    1. ‘Until the interrelatedness of all things is again felt, the healing of humanity will continually look like the worm Ouroboros, continually consuming its own tail, and not getting anywhere.’ Very apt analogy Chris.

  31. Dear Frances I love the grace with which you wrote this article. The complete acceptance you allowed your self for where you were at, with no push to be any where else, except with your body and to allow all the support that you made available to your self, both the medical support and the Esoteric support, is so beautiful to read and to feel. While your haematologist was “truly thrilled” with your body’s response, I feel deeply that how you embraced, in full, your treatment is the natural true way for all of us to heal.

  32. It is so special to read Frances, that “medical staff would often comment on how well my body was accepting their treatments”. To me this proves that when we do care for our bodies and are open to see the truth behind it – e.g. that this illness is there because of the choices I have made in life – there is then a willingness of the body to accept all the help that is presented to us to assist in healing the body and in discarding the false energies that are held in it because of our own choices we made in life.

    1. Dear Nico,
Being open and observing the truth is definitely the key to our body healing. Not only as Frances has shared, but in much more simple ways. By noticing when we feel our body tense and we react to something, the simplicity of noting this, I am discovering opens up understanding of why very quickly. With the understanding it is easy to then move on from the experience, with out it haunting us for years to come. The simplicity of this is so very physical and I can now fully understand how something that we cannot let go of becomes a constant tension in our bodies. A body held in such tension is more prone to all sorts of illness.

  33. What a beautiful blog Frances you show through your experience what is possible when you combine both conventional and esoteric medicine and how truly supportive and loving this is in allowing your body to heal, while reconnecting back to you.

  34. Universal Medicine is here to support humanity, from the simplest awareness of lifestyle choices, to the profound support offered as written about here, this organization is offering support for all of humanity to evolve.

  35. What I enjoyed reading here was your embrace of a whole range of support to best allow your body to do what it does best – heal itself! How cool it is that we have this amazing body that can and will heal itself from anything if given the chance? very inspiring, thank you Frances.

  36. Amazing grace … How sweet the sound … And so very powerful to accept into your life and being. Thank you Frances for sharing your joy at finding the truth in healing and what I too have finally found in Universal Medicine after much searching.

  37. Feeling the choices made from being an eight year old child to the present day, asked me to do the same. I can look back and see my life has not been based on love, but like you, since attending Universal Medicine presentations and accessing sessions with practitioners, it has re-awakened an ability to truly care for my body. Developing and deepening this knowing we all have is truly awesome and it’s never too late to start.

  38. It is truly inspiring when someone can see the diagnosis of an illness or disease in such a positive way and even more so to read how the treatment process was enjoyed whether experiencing the esoteric or conventional medicine. It is so valuable to be able to read about another way to approach illness and disease, thank you, Frances.

    1. Considering the strain on the health system throughout the world and the general state of our health and well-being, and that despite more advances in technology and medicine than ever before and yet with illness and disease rates still rising, could this in fact not only be ‘another’ way to approach illness and disease, but ‘the’ way… taking responsibility for our choices and combining esoteric and western medicine to support true healing…

      1. Absolutely this is true, and is what I experienced when diagnosed with a serious disease, that this combination is the way and it will be amazing when the health care system catches onto this.

  39. I love the fact that you did on-line Esoteric yoga whilst in hospital!… to deeply rest and restore the body, giving it every ounce the opportunity to heal within is superb. This combination of Esoteric therapies and conventional medicine is definitely a prescription for true healing. Beautifully awesome and inspiring of where a path of in-hospital treatment could go…

    1. In hospital treatment that includes the philosophy of the Esoteric Teachings is something that I feel deeply is needed. Humanity will eventually begin to embrace the understanding that one cannot truly heal until the love we feel for ourselves propels us to look at how we live our life and to change what is not working, that which is causing the disease and illness in our bodies. Realising the power that we all hold in our choices is the greatest healing of all.

  40. There are not many patiënts who will say they enjoyed engaging in the process of treatments. It is beautiful to read how you were able to do so and even embraced what was needed in this situation ‘with a lightness of being’. Your commitment to heal with the support of western medicine and Universal Medicine is deeply felt in your blog, you are a power woman!

  41. I agree Frances, the two modalities combined – conventional medicine and Universal Medicine – are truly powerful. Very lovely to read how you turned your life around by making loving choices and taking responsibility for your life.

  42. All the way through reading your sharing I can feel your deep commitment to yourself to love and to providing for your body everything that it needed to fully support it coming back to health. Thank you for it has offered to me a choice to deepen my own commitment to my body.

  43. What you’ve shared here shows me that understanding your illness as an opportunity to heal and fully accepting and embracing the treatments, both medical and complementary is evidently a super important key to your recovery.

    1. I have never felt more loved and supported in my life than by Serge Benhayon, in any point of my life. The level of care and service he holds and the quality required by any Universal Medicine practitioner is undoubtedly unparalleled.

  44. To see your illness as an opportunity for true healing is very inspiring Frances; as is your response to combining traditional medicine and Universal Medicine in your healing.
Thank you for sharing your story and your wisdom.
